Link Building Glossary

Aged Link – an older link that has search engine authority

Article Link – a link coming to your site from an article submitted to an article directory

Anchor Text – text used within the hyperlink

Authority – the trust and value put on a site by a search engine

Backlinks – links from others arriving at your site (also known as incoming links)

Blog Comment – a comment made on a blog that includes a link back to your site

Contextual Link – a link that relates to the content surrounding it

Deep Link – a link aimed at a sub-page on your site and not the home page

Directory Link – a link aimed at your site from a directory of sites

Dofollow Link – a link that the spiders can follow

Forum Link – a link coming from a forum discussion

Hyperlink – a clickable link to another page on the site or a page on another site

Image Link – a link embedded in an image

Incoming Link - links from others arriving at your site (also known as backlinks)

Internal Links – links from one page of your site to another page of your site

Link Age – the age of a particular link

Link Bait – creating content that a large amount of people will want to link to – viral videos are an example.

Link Building – the process of building links for your site

Link Exchange – the exchange of links between sites – (also known as reciprocal links)

Link Farm – a group of inter linked sites – not good in the eyes of the search engines.

Link Footprint – the pattern and strength of links associated with your site

Link Juice – the strength of the link based on the Page Rank of the site providing the link

Link Popularity – an estimate of how popular your site is based on the amount of links pointing at it

Link Relevancy – how relevant the link is based on the content of the site linking to you

No Follow Link - a link aimed at your site that does not pass on authority because it does not allow the search engine spiders to follow the link

One Way Link – a link aimed at your site without a reciprocal link coming from your site

Outbound Links – links aimed at another site from your site

PageRank – a Google measurement of the authority of a site

Press Release Link – a link coming from a press release submitted to a press release directory

Reciprocal Link – the name for the links when there is a link exchange between sites

Site Wide Link – a group of links coming from a site which has a link on every page of the site- not recommended by search engines

Social Media Link – a link from a social media site or profile

Text Link – a link embedded within a section of text
