Links are an indicator to the search engines of the authority of your site. Links coming from other quality sites within your industry play a major role in building search engine trust and authority. To get quality links your website must have quality content on it that makes site owners want to link to it. The more high quality content your site has the more opportunity there is to acquire links from other sites.

The first logical step will be to contact all your suppliers, customers and business associates and ask for a link to your site.

Next submit your website to the directories that feature sites from your industry. Some general directories may be useful too – however on-topic directories, that is, related to your industry are by far the best. General directories that are essential include the Yahoo Directory and the Open Directory (DMOZ).

Article submissions can be used to broaden the variety of links to your site. Write articles about your specialty and submit them to article directories – including a link back to your site. Social media can be a useful source for links. Set up profiles on social medial sites including links to your site.

Comment on forums and on blog posts when the topics are of relevance to the content of your site. These are all ideas that can get your started with link building for your site.

You must make a point of doing this consistently over time and should not be thought of as a one off task.
